Breaking Through is a two-part debut album from Acid James on his NOIDEA imprint. Both parts are built around a natural soundscape, using recorded samples from James's travels. His passion for music and club culture still drives the underlying pulse of each track. The album is a euphoric psychedelic experience.
Part II gets more distorted and granular than Part I, giving the feeling that the songs are breaking through/breaking apart. Even Acid James's artwork for the vinyl sleeve looks like it is fragmenting and breaking up into small pieces. The cover art will slowly zoom out through every single to finally show the bigger picture. If you look closely at the final artwork on the hi-res image, you will see small glitter bits in the design that resemble tiny atoms breaking apart. As an artist, Acid James is breaking through and alongside the listeners, who are being transported on their own auditory psychedelic journey.
James's love for electronica grew from a young age. At 12, he was drawn to the song 'Flutter' by Bonobo, playing the game SSX On Tour. The emotional spirit of the genre led to James's fascination with music and DJing. Further inspiration came from club culture and festivals such as Gottwood and Houghton as he grew up. Listening to Paranoid London - Eating Glue on the dance floor, the raw squelch of the acid line mesmerised him and later became his signature sound. From his early club days performing disco, afro and house, the 303 acid sound kept finding itself amongst his sets. Now the core of each part of the album, his love for acid house is ever-present.
Acid house is still prevalent and very much at the core of Part II. However, the approach to Part II was to create club-orientated style tracks to generate euphoric moments. As a result, Part II is refined, untouched, with organic energetic experimental beats designed to fabricate blissful encounters on the dance floor.
